Let there be (northern) lights! by gsebenste

On our second to last day vacationing in New England, I was alerted via emails from the Space Weather Prediction Center that a major solar flare hit Earth. It initially struck our planet with the wrong polarity, at first...but by 11 PM, Bz slammed negative, and the Kp index soared to 8...and perhaps briefly at 9. What that meant was...Northern Lights! They were visible all the way overhead and even slightly to the south, which is expected for such a major flare. Cloud cover would end our fun after an hour, but not before we got some great shots. Here's mine, looking north from about 10 miles north of White River Junction, VT, near midnight local time. Jaylev's camera SD card drive light is being slammed by his photo taking, and seen at the bottom right part of the photo. The dotted yellow streak near the bottom of the page is a firefly moving across the landscape. http://flic.kr/p/uV3hFQ
