micropolisnyc: One of the least-known aspects of Occupy Wall Street is that it spawned the current revival of the Hare Krishnas. For years, the Hare Krishnas had more or less disappeared from the streets of New York, but then Occupy happened and a couple monks led the Occupiers in chanting. That prompted the Krishnas to start their own 365-day public chant — in Union Square, Washington Sq Park, Times Square and other locations. But the strangest twist in this journey has to do with baking: the Hare Krishnas have started selling premium organic, vegan, gluten-free chocolate-chip cookies. These cookies are baked at an ashram in Bed-Stuy, then set before Krishna, who blesses them before they’re shipped off to various high-end coffee shops in Manhattan and Brooklyn, including The Bean chain and Tea Lounge, where they go for $3.50 each. "These are sanctified foodstuffs," said a devotee known as Bhakta John, who oversees Krishna’s Bakery. "So the standards in the kitchen are very clean as well. We cook at a high consciousness and believe that consciousness gets put into the cookie and into the food." Listen to the full Micropolis story: The Hare Krishna Comeback
