Union of Concerned Scientists: A Safer World STARTs With This Simple Step

On April 8, 2010, President Obama and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev signed a new agreement to reduce each country's vast arsenals of nuclear weapons. The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) is a modest, but critical first step in a renewed global effort to reduce the grave risks posed by nuclear weapons and to chart a path to a safer world.

The United States and Russia together possess 95 percent of the world's approximately 20,000 nuclear weapons. These weapons are a liability, not an asset. They don't make the world safe or address today's real threats to our security. This treaty sends an unambiguous signal to the rest of the world that the United States and Russia are serious about reducing the nuclear threat.

To take effect, the treaty must be ratified by a two-thirds majority of the U.S. Senate, which will be difficult given the partisan divisions in Washington, D.C. these days. But if New START is not ratified, global efforts to reduce the threat of nuclear weapons and prevent their further spread will be seriously undermined.

Your senators need to hear from you! They need to know that Americans haven't forgotten about this critical issue and support efforts to reduce the risk of nuclear weapons. Let your senators know that a safer world STARTs with this simple step-encourage them to ratify START today.
